Year 2 Planning with differentiation and high order activities for literacy to support the new English curriculum. This is a suitable activity for creative writing in the traditional stories unit or as a short write for character description. Children will have the opportunity to develop and use expanded noun phrases, similes, suffixes, contractions and conjunctions to extend ideas and sentences. A good extension for year 2 is to incorporate a twist in the story and so the good characters (the three billy goats) become bad and the troll becomes good. Can be used before or after the little red riding hood unit also available by the same author on TES. There is also a grammar features success ladder included. It is designed for children to be able to self assess and peer assess when editing, and up-level their own work to meet the expected standards. Suitable for year 2 to achieve 'at' and beyond - Greater Depth standard in writing.

The children can read the information text to find new and interesting facts about elephants, crocodiles, snakes, parrots and hippos. They can then make their own flap or pop up booklet with headings, captions and interesting facts about jungle animals and then read them to an audience. The text supports learning features of non-fiction text and demonstrates how to engage the reader with questions and interesting facts. This resources is differentiated for early readers working towards band 2 and fluent readers working at greater depth. The reading also supports writing non-fiction and using ambitious and technical vocabulary as well as grammar features (in particular questions). Writers working at greater depth can add their own exclamatory sentences about each animal. The text is presented interestingly and has clear text and visuals.

Charlie Super hero Underpants is a complete bundle and unit of work with planning and differentiated resources. This is an excellent story for reluctant boy writers. You will find three examples of Exemplar text that can be used as a model piece of writing for students to learn in the imitation stage. The newspaper recounts are set in the context of the story as well as other examples, related to sports day and a made up news event about a fox invading sports day. The children will be able to design their own superhero, write recounts or news, and also be able to make inventions linked to whatever is happening in school or around the world. Year 2 Guided Reading This is a complete 5 week unit of work around the text Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish. It is suited to guided reading taught in a Reciprocal Reading approach. It is also useful to use to practice SATS style questions for Year 2 working at greater depth and within. Also adaptable for year 3. The story is linked to materials, science and rockets, and sustainable environmental issues. It is very suitable for boys because of the dinosaur theme. It is also a good book to use if you are doing a fossils unit or learning about climate change. Year 2 Writing Narrative Where the Wild Things Are Film and Book Exemplar text to introduce children to narrative writing - called Voyage and Return. Both the film and book are used simultaneously to learn about the main character and write a narrative. Non-fiction labels and captions or narrative text - familiar settings.Retell and sequence. Describe the main character Sam or Jeremy. Write a list of rules for the bully Jeremy to follow. Write a letter to Sam advising him how to behave if someone is mis treating you or bullying you inside school, in the playground, or out of school. Link the story to Anti bullying week. Make a rosette from Jeremy to Sam as a good will gesture. The main characters (jeremy, sam, old lady, park keeper) can be made into stick puppets to role play the story successfully.

Great visual resources suitably differentiated for year 1. Read the Blue Balloon and sequence the pictures and use time connectives to retell. Write a list and captions using words to describe the balloon changing shape. Link to the new curriculum and used expanded noun phrases and or adjectives. Use phonics and sounds to match words to pictures. As creative starters to the unit -teachers can write a message on a helium balloon from each child and release in outdoor playground - ‘This balloon is indestructable. Please look after it!’ Wait and see if anyone replies to the message. Blow up a balloon and release in hall for inspiration to dance and movement in P.E. Also includes ideas for problem solving in maths using balloons as inspiration.

Year 2 Writing unit The children can use this resources to research all about the London Olympic Venues and the Torch relay. Children can be given parts of the information to think of their own caption or headings. It will support them to write a non-fiction piece of writing. It can also be used as part of Geography to find out about in London. This unit was written to celebrate the arrival of the Olympics in 2012. However, it can still be used to compare changes in local area/London, how Olympics compare, or in general to read around Sports Day.
